Institute for Autism Research (IAR)
The Institute for Autism Research (IAR) is an interdisciplinary collaborative research center dedicated to understanding autism spectrum disorder and enhancing the lives of those affected and their families.
Researchers from diverse backgrounds work together to address critical questions involving causes, development, assessment, clinical treatment, and education.
This research work has led to development of several new and effective treatments which are provided by IAR staff to our community partners and schools.
Organization for Autism Research (OAR)
We are the Organization for Autism Research, better known as OAR.
OAR is an organization founded and led by parents and grandparents of children with autism, who serve as the Board of Directors providing leadership, life experience, and heart.
If our parent leaders are the heart, our Scientific Council, 16 remarkable and equally dedicated autism professionals are the brain when it comes to our mission and research direction.
They are not simply a list of names on letterhead; they are a “roll up your sleeves” team that we call on throughout the year to share their professional expertise and review the merits of all research grant applications.
Center for Autism and Behavioral Education Research
The Center for Autism and Behavioral Education Research is focused on research, training for educators and therapists, and providing needed services to the community for individuals with autism spectrum disorders or other developmental disabilities (of all ages), and children who are struggling either academically or behaviorally.
The center comprises a multidisciplinary group of faculty members who share their expertise around the shared goal of applying behavior analytic principles to affect beneficial behavior change. Faculty and affiliated students conduct research on a range of topics that include (but are not limited to): Early child communication and language development Reading Assessment Parent coaching Severe problem behavior Stereotypy Self-injury Technology Through our collaborative efforts, we are helping to shape the fields of developmental disabilities and education by applying behavioral science to improving the skills, behaviors, and academic achievement of individuals with disabilities.
Autism/Asperger's Research Program
Our research group is dedicated to finding the causes of autism, how to prevent autism, and how to best help people with autism. Our research team and collaborators includes many physicians, nutritionists, biochemists, scientists, study coordinators, and other staff. Our focus is primarily on biomedical issues, including nutritional deficiencies, metabolic disorders, and bacterial/yeast overgrowths in the gut. However, we strongly recommend that a combination of biomedical, behavioral, therapy, and educational interventions be used to best help children and adults with autism spectrum disorder.

How Does Cannabis Consumption Affect Autism? by Jeremy Kossen
Here you will find, an article about how effective cannabis is at treating Autism and the pros and cons using anecdotal and research-based evidence. The article also acknowledges parents' fears about using cannabis.
But the research doesn’t exist because of medical establishment fears about testing cannabis—with its many active compounds seen as potentially uncontrollable variables—on children.
Different Brains
Different Brains ® is a 501C3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the understanding and acceptance of the basic variations in the human brain known as neurodiversity; ending the stigma attached to the related diagnoses and treatment; uniting silos of resources and research whose goals could be better achieved through collaboration; offering support to families and caregivers; and improving the lives and maximizing the potential of those whose brains may be different.

Temple Grandin may be the most famous person with Autism, a condition that affects 1 in 88 children. Since her birth in 1947, our understanding of it has undergone a great transformation, leading to more hope than ever before that we may finally learn the causes of and treatments for autism.
Weaving her own experience with remarkable new discoveries, Grandin introduces the advances in neuroimaging and genetic research that link brain science to behavior, even sharing her own brain scan to show which anomalies might explain common symptoms. Most excitingly, she argues that raising and educating kids on the autism spectrum must focus on their long-overlooked strengths to foster their unique contributions. The Autistic Brain brings Grandin’s singular perspective into the heart of the autism revolution.
Spark for Autism
Today we simply don’t know enough about Autism. SPARK—a landmark autism research project—aims to make important progress possible. SPARK stands for ‘Simons Foundation Powering Autism Research,’ and the mission is simple: we want to speed up research and advance our understanding of autism to help improve lives
Autistic individuals are more likely to be LGBTQ+
New research from the University of Cambridge suggests that autistic individuals are less likely to identify as heterosexual and more likely to identify with a diverse range of sexual orientations than non-autistic individuals.
The findings have important implications for the healthcare and support of autistic individuals. The results are published in the journal Autism Research.
LGBTQ + and autism spectrum disorder: Experiences and challenges
Research focused on gender identity, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and the experiences of those who identify as LGBTQ+, remains minimal. Initial findings have indicated that those on the autism spectrum may be more likely to identify as homosexual and experience more fluid gender identity. Insufficient consideration has been given to intersectionality around a disability status and gender identity, and few have focused this conversation specifically on the experiences of those with ASD.
Here you will see in this section, resources intended for, but not limited to: first responders, board certified behavior analysts, psychologists, doctors, therapists and parents. The types of resources include: first responder guides, tools, awareness training guides, books and more
Disability Awareness Training
Most people want to show respect and sensitivity to people with disabilities. But they simply don’t know how, and with good reason: amid dozens of disabilities and millions who have them, there is so much to know that it overwhelms most people.
That’s where David Whalen comes in.
An engaging speaker with nearly 20 years in the field of disabilities, he strips down the complex issues to their understandable essence — and clearly communicates the steps anyone can take to respond properly to people with disabilities.

Niagara University First Responders Disability Awareness Training
The mission of the First Responder Disability Awareness Training (FR-DAT) project is to develop a training curriculum for law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical services (EMS) and 911 operators/dispatchers that provides all first responders with the knowledge necessary to best serve and respond to individuals with disabilities.
The content of the training curriculum will be specific to First Responder needs when interacting and responding to incidents, situations, and accidents that involve individuals with disabilities.
The end product is in a Train-the-Trainer format that includes PowerPoint slides, CD-ROM, working manual, resource materials, a website, and on-going support from the Niagara University FR-DAT office.
This project has been funded with a New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC) First Responders Disability Awareness Training Grant for the period, September 2010 to August 2013.
Experience Autism®
Autism is on the rise, with as many as 1 in 64 children in the U.S. now affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
As many of 50,000 of these children turn 18 every year. Individuals with ASD are particularly vulnerable in police encounters and emergency situations due to features of their disorder.
Police departments are challenged to safely and effectively respond to the growing population of individuals on the spectrum, who are growing up. Law enforcement officials want and need training to increase positive outcomes and minimize risk in calls involving individuals with ASD.
Experience Autism® is an engaging, hands-on training that helps law enforcement professionals and other first responders recognize the signs of autism and respond to the needs of this population.
Officers experience different features of ASD through Experience Autism® simulations.
They develop empathy and identify how to best meet the multiple needs of those with ASD during contact.
You may have heard of the Los Angeles Police Department’s celebrated Mission Possible program.
Experience Autism® is the foundation Mission Possible, created by autism specialist Emily Iland, M.A. Officers at Mission Possible and other training events report that Experience Autism® can help prepare law enforcement professionals and other first responders for real-life contact with individuals with ASD.

INCLUDEnyc fosters positive futures and enhances the quality of life for young people with any disability from birth to age 26 and their families in New York City.
We promote access to educational, employment, and independent living opportunities for young people, and advocate with families for meaningful inclusion in the broader community.
First Responder eLearning
According to the Centers for Disease Control autism impacts 1 in 68 children.
As more children, teens, and adults are impacted by ASD, first responders such as police, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians will have more interactions with this population.
Individuals with autism may struggle to communicate, make appropriate eye contact, or even respond to someone asking them their name.
The behaviors that children and teens with ASD display vary greatly which is why autism is described as a spectrum disorder.
However, parents and professionals agree that safety is a huge concern for everyone in this population as they may easily be distracted, lost, or even elope from their school or surroundings.
This training aims at enabling first responders to recognize the signs of ASD and provide suggestions that may assist them when interacting with individuals with ASD in the community.

Behavioral Health Center of Excellence® (BHCOE)
Behavioral Health Center of Excellence® (BHCOE®) is an international accrediting body created to meet accreditation needs specific to the delivery of behavior analysis.
The BHCOE’s accreditation requirements undergo regular review according to international standards for organizations that grant accreditation.
All BHCOE requirements and survey content are reviewed annually by content experts. BHCOE Accreditation ® is a certification given to an applied behavior analysis provider once it has demonstrated it has met and continues to meet an assortment of clinical and administrative standards as determined by an independent third-party evaluator.
The concept of accrediting Applied Behavior Analysis organizations began in 2009 when a large ABA organization became insolvent and left hundreds of families without services.
As a response to this insolvency, a transparency committee was formed by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) and began identifying quality measures for ABA providers through the California Regional Centers.
A five-year pilot project occurred between 2009-2014 to provide the state with additional information about quality assurance metrics for behavioral organizations.
Subsequently, a group of behavior analysts originally involved in the DDS Pilot Project came together in August 2015 to formalize the BHCOE as an international accrediting body and began globally discussing and shaping the Quality Assurance Standards and BHCOE Accreditation Program.

CAT-Kit
Cognitive Affective Training (CAT) is a method for inspiring and structuring conversation between people on thoughts, emotions and behavior using a set of carefully designed tools, collectively referred to as the CAT-kit.
The CAT-kit was originally developed in Denmark for children and young adults on the autism spectrum.
This inspiring tool has been promoting mutual dialogue and self-insight and improving its users' abilities for over ten years now.
Experience with the CAT-kit has proven that it is a valuable aid when working with social communication in numerous target groups in both the normal and the special needs range.
In Scandinavia, the CAT-kit is used by teachers and education professionals in the public school system, special education, residential institutions and treatment facilities and psychiatric services.
Psychologists use the kit for cognitive behavior therapy with children, young people and adults.
The method is particularly suitable for people with autistic spectrum conditions, OCD, ADHD, behavioral and emotional disorders and similar conditions.
The CAT-kit provides a visual structure that can be used to clarify, achieve self-insight, communicate personal experiences and, last but not least, identify new, appropriate communication of thoughts and feelings.
The kit is currently available in a printed version and as an app in nine different languages.
Paradigm Behavior
My curiosity for Autism came about when I taught martial arts.
I remember the frustration I felt when a student politely raised his hand and said “Ms. Christina, I’m tired. No, no, no!” and promptly lay down in the middle of the group while we were practicing roundhouse kicks.
As marital arts is known for its discipline, I punished the student with endurance drills, and when the student refused, I sat him out of class that day.
Minutes later his mom politely explained her son had Autism and asked me if I could allow him to rejoin!
Needless to say, I felt awful. I quickly modified my instructions for the student so he could participate with the group.
Soon after that session, I found a part-time nanny position for a child with Autism that essentially introduced me to applied behavior analysis (ABA), and then ultimately became a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA).
I’m not going to lie. Learning ABA was very overwhelming for me.
The language and concepts are so precise that it probably took me a couple of years of doing direct therapy, supervision, workshops and lots of online searches on ABA before it “clicked” and I was able to see the “big picture” (probably a glimmer, but it was an AHA! moment).
I was able to connect how these programs contributed to client’s short term and long term growth.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to experience both in home and clinical therapy, as well as offering consultative services through the Medicaid waiver program.
Through these, I’ve had the privilege to meet some great people, and, even more rewarding, offer families who are dealing with the daily struggle, a helping hand.
It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience, but I know there’s so much more I can do to help.
That’s why I started Paradigm Behavior.
I understand the need for parents to be able to naturally integrate concepts of ABA into their lifestyle.
My goal is to create a comfortable space for parents and therapists to utilize resources that are not overwhelming and effective.
I enjoy Paradigm Behavior as a platform to stay curious and stay creative in this field.
On my website you’ll find a mix of free and paid resources that are readily available for you to pick up and use today.

Stimm Jewelry
Born in London. Raised in Toronto. Citizen of the world.
John has been designing jewelry for 30 years - a career often punctuated by travels to the far corners of the earth, seeking inspiration for his collections. There was an element of synchronicity that started his partnership with Boris. One breezy March morning, as he was taking his little boy, Valentino, to school, he discovered that the beat-up old family Volvo had been broken into.
There were papers, cds and vintage parking receipts littered about. Valentino picked up the mobile phone holder that was at his feet - the type that clamps on to the air vent. The magnet that holds the phone is covered by rubber.
He had already told his old man that he liked stroking the rubber case that holds the Iphone. 'It makes me feel calm, Daddy'. When he picked up the phone holder in the car, he started rubbing it and asked if he could keep it.
That was an auspicious start to designing for Stimm.

The Safety Bed
We began the development of the SleepSafe® Bed, a durable medical equipment product (DME) in September of 2000 at the request of the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD).
They required a bed that would prevent falls and entrapment for special needs individuals in their group homes, particularly pediatric patients with physical and cognitive disabilities.
With a fresh sheet of paper, we approached the project without a perceived notion.
Our background in producing custom furniture allowed us to look at the challenge with a different perspective.
Why not make a safety bed that is totally functional and more beneficial to the user?
We were one of five companies that submitted a prototype for review and the only company to resubmit their design with the modifications the OPWDD requested.
Eventually, SleepSafe® Beds, was approved by the OPWDD for use in their facilities. The SleepSafe® Bed now represents a new standard for the agency’s bed safety guidelines.
RAD Children's Furniture
RAD CHILDREN’S FURNITURE was founded with a vision to empower parents and caregivers to encourage children to fully and completely be themselves, to grow at their own pace, to enjoy the wonderment of being a child, to fully express themselves through movement, the power of imagination and the joy of becoming.
Our children's furniture and play structures are the offshoots of many schools of developmental thought that honor the child as a full person from Day One.
Special Needs Products -- Disability Products
Coping with disability can be a real challenge.
Or, it can just mean making minor adjustments in how things are done.
The difference between the two is often knowledge and having the right tools - special need products that meet your individual needs.
Whether you have your own special needs, or are responsible for accommodating the special needs of someone else, you need to learn about what disability equipment is 'out there' and figure out which products are best for your circumstances. It can easily become overwhelming.

Ark Therauputic
As an SLP (speech-language pathologist),
I often need to get into the mouth - to provide tactile cues for certain speech sounds, to work on tongue lateralization for feeding skills, etc.
Back in 2000, however, there were very few tools available for oral motor therapy, let alone for these very specific goals.
Luckily for me, I married an engineer!
So my wonderful problem-solving husband John and I joined forces to create ARK Therapeutic.
Our mission has always been to create solutions that will make life easier for you and your loved ones.
Our first product was ARK's Probe for oral motor input and sensory stimulation.
This tool allowed me to safely get into the mouth, direct the articulators, de-sensitize, and more.
But for some of my kids it wasn't enough - they needed more input.
So one day while observing me rapidly tapping a child's tongue with the Probe trying to add extra stimulation, John said,
"What if we make it vibrate?" To make a long story short, that was the beginning of what would later become ARK's Z-Vibe®.
Fast forward 18 years, and we've since developed over 100 different products for speech & oral motor development, sensory integration, oral defensiveness, texture aversions, fine motor, drinking, feeding, chewing, and more.
Each ARK product was created for the same reasons as above - we either saw a need within my own practice, or a therapist/parent would share a problem and ask us to create a solution.

Each of our robots also has a name, inspired by the values and commitments of the individuals we admire.

Air Doctor HEPA Air Purifier
AirDoctor's UltraHEPA™ Filter is 100 times more effective than ordinary HEPA filters, capturing 100% of some of the most dangerous ultra fine particles as small as .003 microns in size.
The AirDoctor combines our UltraHEPA™ filter with our proprietary dual action Carbon/Gas Trap/VOC Filter. The dual action Carbon/Gas Trap/VOC Filter removes dangerous ozone, gas and volatile organic compounds like formaldehyde. AirDoctor's Auto-Mode uses a professional-grade air quality sensor to assess the air quality in the room and immediately adjust to the correct level of filtration.
You can only purify the air, if the air passes through the filter and does not avoid the filter by passing through unsealed leaks.
The AirDoctor is a 100% sealed system to ensure all the air you breathe is pure and filtered. An indicator light on AirDoctor tells you when it's time to replace the filters. AirDoctor uses our exclusive Professional WhisperJet fans that are 30% quieter than the fans found in ordinary air purifiers.
That means you can run AirDoctor at the highest speeds while still enjoying a peaceful home environment.
A Non-Exhaustive list of apps from the Association for Science in Autism Treatment (ASAT)
This list of apps should be viewed as a set of tools which can be utilized by parents and teachers; however, no single tool here is absolutely essential to a students’ learning and some parents may prefer to use a less technological approach.
Further, this list contains apps from many different domains and many different developers, all of whom may have varying perspectives on educating students on the autism spectrum.
Inclusion in this list does not necessarily indicate that evidence exists on its use.
We at ASAT recommend that to maintain a commitment to science-based treatment, these (and any) apps can be incorporated into existing treatment plans to supplement activities, and data should always be collected throughout the use of each app.
With the guidance of their team of providers, parents should collect data on target skill acquisition, degree of carry over, nature of specific errors, as well as operationally defined challenging behaviors for reduction. It would also be important to decide if the app is being used to target acquisition versus retention or generalization of skills.

Lily & Magnolia Travel
Planning vacations of any kind involves a lot of research. After all, your goal is to go on a vacation your whole family will love! However, the hours upon hours of emails, phone calls, and looking up just one more thing is enough to make you want to skip the vacation planning period!
I hear you!
When my oldest son was diagnosed with autism, I thought our days of travel were long gone! I didn’t know how he would react in new places or the sensory overload. But all that changed one day when my son came home and asked me to plan a trip to the National Mall in Washington DC. I knew that I couldn’t keep putting off vacations because I thought they were too difficult to plan and meet his needs at the same time. At the time, I didn’t know that autism-friendly vacations were a thing.
After I became a travel advisor in 2018 I went on the search to see if there was anything out there that could support my son during our vacations. I found and studied to become a Certified Autism Travel Professional. This helped me learn how to modify our vacations and make them autism-friendly. Of course, it also helped me fulfill a passion of mine, which is helping parents of children with autism learn how they too can travel the world via a little autistic-globetrotting.
Since I founded Lily and Magnolia Travel in 2018, I have cultivated relationships with tourism suppliers that have programs and accommodations for those with autism. I am happy to say that that list is growing every year!
My goal is to remove the stress of autism-friendly vacation planning for you. This means you can vacation with confidence knowing I’ve taken care of all the more difficult components and you can simply pack your bags and be on your way!
I will begin by listening to what you want for a family vacation. I will then use that information to create an autism-friendly vacation package that will make every member of your family happy! Your vacation will include autism-friendly airlines or autism-friendly cruise lines, as well as autism-friendly hotels or resorts, and autism-friendly activities. Are you curious to see how I can help you? Contact me today and let’s chat about your travel dreams!
National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program
Vaccines save lives by preventing disease.
Most people who get vaccines have no serious problems. Vaccines, like any medicines, can cause side effects, but most are very rare and very mild. Some health problems that follow vaccinations are not caused by vaccines.
In very rare cases, a vaccine can cause a serious problem, such as a severe allergic reaction.
In these instances, the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) may provide financial compensation to individuals who file a petition and are found to have been injured by a VICP-covered vaccine. Even in cases in which such a finding is not made, petitioners may receive compensation through a settlement
National Vaccine Information Center (Nvic.org)
“The non-profit National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) is an independent clearinghouse for information on diseases and vaccine science, policy, law and the ethical principle of informed consent.
NVIC publishes information about vaccination and health to encourage educated decision-making.
NVIC does not make vaccine use recommendations.
NVIC supports the availability of all preventive health care options and the legal right for individuals to make informed, voluntary health choices for themselves and their children.”
Vaxxed and Vaxxed 2
"Dr. Hooker enlists the help of Dr. Andrew Wakefield, the British gastroenterologist falsely accused of starting the anti-vax movement when he first reported in 1998 that the MMR vaccine may cause autism. In his ongoing effort to advocate for children’s health, Wakefield directs this documentary examining the evidence behind an appalling cover-up committed by the government agency charged with protecting the health of American citizens.
Interviews with pharmaceutical insiders, doctors, politicians, and parents of vaccine-injured children reveal an alarming deception that has contributed to the skyrocketing increase of autism and potentially the most catastrophic epidemic of our lifetime"
I Can Decide (Del Bigtree)
"At the Informed Consent Action Network, you are the authority over your health choices and those of your children
In a medical world manipulated by advertising and financial interests, true information is hard to find and often harder to understand.
Our goal is to put the power of scientificaly researched health information in your hands and to be bold and transparent in doing so, thereby enabling your medical decisions to come from tangible understanding, not medical coercion."
Vaxtruth
"Many people are just beginning their search for information about vaccines. I receive messages and emails daily from parents, grandparents, and family friends who are trying to help their loved ones navigate the maze of information and misinformation regarding vaccines.
I have been researching and writing about vaccines and vaccine-injuries for several years.
The VaxTruth website currently (as of November 2016) houses more than 200 articles, and finding what you need can be a challenge."
